The applications below represent areas where conventional radiation detectors face limitations due to radiation damage, environmental constraints, or system complexity. Our work focuses on developing and demonstrating diamond-based detection technologies that address these challenges, with emphasis on performance stability, radiation tolerance, and suitability for deployment outside controlled laboratory environments.
Radiation detectors for space and planetary missions must operate reliably under extreme radiation, temperature, and power constraints. We develop compact diamond-based detectors and scintillators designed for long-duration missions, with emphasis on radiation hardness, low mass, and minimal shielding requirements. Our work supports applications including planetary neutron spectroscopy, radiation environment monitoring, and surface or orbital science payloads.
Radiation detection systems for nuclear security require high sensitivity, low false-alarm rates, and robustness in real-world environments. We develop neutron detection technologies that emphasize discrimination capability, stability, and deployability. Diamond-based detectors offer intrinsic radiation hardness, fast timing, and reduced sensitivity to background gamma fields, making them well-suited for portal monitoring, mobile platforms, and field instruments.
Modern accelerator and beamline facilities demand detectors that can tolerate high flux, high dose, and fast time structure.
